The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities' attempts to seek independence and external forces' interference in China's internal affairs are the root cause of tensions across the Taiwan Straits, Chinese State Councilor and Minister of National Defense Li Shangfu said at the 20th Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore on Sunday.

He said the DPP authorities and external interference are "the biggest troublemaker" in changing the status quo across the Taiwan Straits and that the Taiwan question is China's internal affair which brooks no external interference.

"The one-China principle has become the consensus of the international community and the basic norm governing international relations," Li said. "Any attempt to fudge and hollow out the one-China principle is absurd and dangerous."

Li said China's reunification is the common aspiration of the people and has become an irresistible trend.

China is willing to strive for peaceful reunification with utmost sincerity but will not renounce the use of force, Li warned, adding that the Chinese army will resolutely safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity without hesitation.
