Tuesday marks Mangzhong, or the Grain in Ear, the ninth solar term and the third solar term of the summer on the Chinese lunar calendar. Mangzhong usually falls between June 5 and 7. During Mangzhong, farmers in China will welcome one of the busiest periods for agricultural activities. Mangzhong also starts a period of abundant rainfall, nicknamed the Plum Rain season, especially in the provinces of Zhejiang, Jiangsu and Fujian. Frequent rain makes the weather hot and humid, and it is the right time for plums to ripen.
