An evacuation is underway in several settlements in Ukraine after an explosion at the Nova Kakhovka dam.

According to Ukrinform news, at least 742 people have already been evacuated in Kherson, where the dam is located, with several settlements in the region at risk of flooding.

Ukraine has blamed Russia for the destruction of the dam. Andriy Yermak, the head of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's office, called it "an attempt by terrorists to raise the stakes and scare everyone with a possible nuclear disaster."

Russia said the situation at the dam was a consequence of strikes by Ukrainian armed forces which have continued daily since the summer of 2022, TASS news agency reported citing a Russian-installed official in Nova Kakhovka.

TASS also cited the official as saying that the dam was continuing to crumble, and that water was flowing "uncontrollably."
