June 5 is the World Environment Day promoted by the United Nations. This year's theme is "Beat Plastic Pollution." Plastic plays a crucial role in addressing today's environmental challenges as it intersects with climate change, pollution and biodiversity degradation, according to Zhang Jianyu, executive director of the BRI Green Development Institute. Professor Saleem Ali from the University of Delaware emphasizes the need for a global effort to regulate plastics. Duke University professor Jackson Ewing cautions that transformation will not be easy without viable alternatives for consumers and without providing incentives for stakeholders in the plastic industry to reduce production.
