The gaokao is the standardized college entrance exam in China, marking the start of a new phase in students' lives. Families make special food items for students in the hope of them passing the exam successfully. Zongzi, a unique type of glutinous rice dumpling, is a traditional Chinese food served during Dragon Boat Festival in June. The food is also a symbol of "high scores" because of its homophonic translation. Parents usually make zongzi for students during the gaokao which falls on June 7 and 8.
