05:51

China has been fighting desertification for years, especially in its northern regions. One major project is the Three-North Shelterbelt Forest Program, also known as the "Great Green Wall." Launched in 1978, the project consists of forestation in northwest, north and northeast China in order to hold back the aftermath of sandstorms and soil erosion. The eight-phase project, covering 13 provincial regions, is expected to be completed by 2050.

Zhang Junjie, director of the Initiative for Sustainable Investment at Duke Kunshan University, explains the project in detail and shares insights on its meaning for the global ecology.
