Fish dish bears good wishes for students taking China's gaokao exam

Over twelve million Chinese students are taking the annual national college entrance exam, commonly known as gaokao, from June 7, 2023.

To wish for good scores for their children, hopeful parents prepare a popular dish called hongshao liyu, or carp fish braised in soy sauce, as it represents an old and enduring Chinese cultural symbol for courage, perseverance, and accomplishment.

"Liyu Tiao Longmen" is a five-character expression in Chinese mythology literally meaning "carp fish jumping over the Dragon's Gate," a gate located at the top of a waterfall cascading from a legendary mountain.

The phrase was once used as a metaphor for a person's success in passing very difficult imperial examinations in ancient times. Bearing that metaphor, a student facing very important examinations is just like a carp trying to leap over the Dragon's Gate. Thus, this carp fish dish becomes popular every year over the period of the gaokao.
