Foreign diplomats in China make joint call for sustainable development
03:16

A group of foreign diplomats from 19 countries, including Fiji, Mauritius and the Bahamas, as well as members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, have released a joint statement calling for preserving ecological conservation and promoting sustainable development.

These diplomats made the joint call while visiting a village named Huawu and planting trees together in southwest China's Guizhou Province.

Villagers in Huawu used to make a living through fishing, but overfishing had caused water pollution. To restore the ecosystem and help villagers overcome poverty, the local government has made significant efforts to develop tourism, leveraging its breathtaking natural scenery.

"I think it's extremely important to keep the ecological balance in mind and keep it foremost in many ways, because we all depend on it ultimately. And the quality of our lives is so much affected by that," said Paulette Bethel, ambassador of the Bahamas to China. "I think that you've done a fantastic job here in this province in terms of keeping that balance, as far as I can see."

Now the once impoverished, isolated hamlet bustles with tourists during holidays, and businesses like homestays and live-streaming e-commerce have brought new opportunities to local fishermen to improve their livelihoods.

Huawu received over 70,000 visitors from January to April this year, bringing in a total income of nearly 30 million yuan, or $4.2 million.
