A man armed with a knife attacked a group of preschool children playing by a lake in the French Alps on Thursday, injuring four along with an adult.
The attack, which happened in the French alpine town of Annecy, was carried out by a Syrian national with legal refugee status in France, a police official told Reuters.
French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said on Twitter that the attacker had been arrested. Two children and one adult are in life-threatening condition, while two children were slightly hurt, police said.
"Children and one adult are between life and death. The nation is in shock," French President Emmanuel Macron said in a statement on Twitter, calling the attack "an act of absolute cowardice."
Two of the four young children hurt in the attack were foreign nationals, one from Germany and one from Britain, according to AFP, citing a security source.
The suspect, who was arrested, did not have a terrorist motive, according to the local prosecutor.
