South Wutai Mountain, sitting 1,688 meters above sea level, is a major scenic spot in the Zhongnan Mountains. It is one of the most famous holy places for Chinese Buddhists. Wutai, which means "five terraces," refers to the five main peaks of the mountain. It was given this name to distinguish it from Wutai Mountain in Shanxi Province to the north of Xi'an.
