A federal investigation into the illegal employment of migrant children from Guatemala in the U.S. has expanded to include meatpacking and produce companies in at least 11 states, NBC News reported on Thursday.

The news agency said that investigators from the Justice Department, the Department of Homeland Security's Homeland Security Investigations and White House officials are participating in the expanded scrutiny.

Earlier this year, it was reported that officials from the Justice Department and the Department of Homeland Security were attempting to figure out whether a human smuggling scheme brought migrant children to work for various firms in the meatpacking industry across the country.

The investigators did not name any of the firms currently under investigation.

Over the past two years, more than 260,000 migrant children have come alone to the U.S., and nearly half of them are from Guatemala, the news agency said.

The U.S. Labor Department has recorded a 69 percent increase in minors employed in violation of federal laws since 2018.
