All roads lead to Rome, as the saying goes, and the most prestigious is the Appian Way, a paved road of more than 500 kilometers dating back to 312 BC. Named after Roman statesman Appius Claudius Caecus, it once lied between Rome and Brindisi, on Italy's eastern coast.

Excavators have unearthed relics from different periods, including a marble bust from the second century AD and an early papal square coin minted between 690 and 730. They have also found fragments of glass and ceramics, mosaic and bits of amphora. Earlier this month, Italy presented its bid for the Appian Way to be listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
