The annual national entrance exam, or the gaokao, takes place on Wednesday and Thursday this year. For many, the exam paves the way to more opportunities, even a way to change their lives. In rural areas, this is especially true. There, students are finding inspiration in the story of China's first civilian taikonaut, who set off for space last week and whose humble beginnings have sparked heated discussion.
