Asia News Wrap: Severe heat closes schools in Bangladesh and more

Here are a few stories from around Asia you may have missed this week.

A sizzling heatwave in Bangladesh has prompted the closure of primary schools and triggered frequent power cuts. This worsened conditions for residents unable to run fans to cool themselves as weather officials warned relief was not imminent. 

Reuters reported that "The maximum temperature soared to nearly 41 degrees Celsius from 32 degrees Celsius 10 days ago. The Bangladesh Meteorological Department warned that there was no end in sight for the heat."

The Shenzhou-15 crew returned to China on Sunday morning after six months on the China Space Station. 

The crew members, who were in high spirits on their return, were replaced by the Shenzhou-16 team last week. The landing took place in the Gobi Desert.

Flash floods hit Klang city in Malaysia leaving main roads and several homes flooded. Fifty to 100 houses were inundated by 10 to 50 centimeters of water, and forced the evacuation of more than 20 families. 

The country's natural resources, environment and climate change minister, Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, said his ministry will implement a flood mitigation plan as a long-term solution to deal with flooding in Klang.

Indonesia is expecting a severe dry season from the impact of the El Nino weather pattern, threatening harvests and raising the risks of forest fires, the head of its weather agency said on Tuesday. 

According to Reuters, Dwikorita Karnawati, head of Indonesia's meteorological, climatological and geophysics agency, said, "Looking at the data we have, El Nino started in June and will affect almost all of Indonesia and worsen until September." She told a press conference that El Nino would cause severe drought on the main islands of Indonesia, with some likely to see no rain or just 30 percent of the typical amount. The country experienced devastating forest fires in 2019 which caused about $5.2 billion of economic losses, according to the World Bank.

The deputy governor of Afghanistan's northern Badakhshan province was killed by a suicide car bomb on Tuesday. 

"Nissar Ahmad Ahmadi, with his driver, have been killed and six civilians were injured," said Mahzudeen Ahmadi, the head of the information office of Badakshan, a province in the far north of the country. The car bomb attack occurred in Faizabad, the capital of Badakhshan Province. ISIS claimed responsibility for the bombing.
