China urges U.S. to act on words of not asking others to take sides

The Chinese Foreign Ministry on Friday urged the United States to follow its commitment of not demanding that other countries pick a side between Beijing and Washington.

Spokesperson Wang Wenbin told reporters that U.S. diplomatic missions around the globe should act on its Secretary of State Antony Blinken's remarks on Thursday that the U.S. is "not asking anyone to choose between the United States and China."

He urged the U.S. side to be "truly open-minded" about other countries' growing ties with China.

It should stop bludgeoning Huawei and other Chinese firms, stop coercing allies into restricting chip exports to China, stop baiting or forcing other countries into turning away from cooperation with China, and stop spreading disinformation about China such as the "debt trap" narrative, Wang emphasized.

Quoting George Washington, the first U.S. president, he said, "actions, not words, are the true criterion of the attachment of friends."

"We will listen to what the U.S. says, but more importantly, we will be watching what it does," said Wang.
