A forum dubbed "Life without Limits" spotlighting women's power was held during the ongoing Shanghai International Film Festival on June 10, 2023.
Many films nowadays promote strong women with fascinating stories and outstanding leading roles, creating a new set of role models and a more enlightened mindset. At the recent forum, Chinese actress Zhang Ziyi and director Peter Chan shared some of their stories and ideas while discussing women's roles and performances in various fields.
Zhang Ziyi said she has faced all of the challenges in her career with a fearless heart and an overriding sense of curiosity. She has played some unforgettable characters, many with distinctive characteristics that bear no resemblance to her real personality. She said that to deliver her best performance, she always tried to step into that person's shoes.

Zhang said she loves being an actress because she can vicariously experience other people's lives through the various roles she is cast in. Her first leading role was in the 1999 film "The Road Home." Since then, she has racked up a catalog of hits all featuring strong female characters that have netted her numerous industry awards. The list includes "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon," "House of Flying Daggers" and "The Grandmaster." Throughout her career, she has never set any boundaries for herself, she said.

Director Peter Chan shared his ideas from a male perspective. "No matter in what field you work or which gender you are, it is crucial to embrace your career and life with a strong sense of passion," he said. He believes this is the best way to overcome failure and achieve success by persevering. He also talked about his good friend Michelle Yeoh, who recently became the first Asian woman to win an Oscar for lead actress. Chan said he always feels touched by Yeoh's performances on the screen, as well as her energy and spirit. He praised her for accepting so many different roles, trying new things and pushing herself creatively, and overcoming all challenges with her perseverance and tireless efforts. He said people shouldn't try to limit themselves or underestimate what they are capable of achieving.
