Former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi died on Monday at the age of 86 at the San Raffaele hospital in Milan, the press office of his political party Forza Italia confirmed.
Berlusconi was re-admitted to hospital in Milan for scheduled health check-ups related to his chronic leukemia on June 9, just weeks after being discharged following a long stay in April.
According to Italy's ANSA agency, the state funeral of Berlusconi will take place in the Milan Cathedral on Wednesday.
He has headed four separate Italian governments between 1994 and 2011.
Berlusconi is also listed by Forbes Magazine as one of the world's top 500 billionaires, with a net worth of around $7 billion. Most of his fortune comes from Mediaset, Italy's largest private broadcaster.
