Various locations in China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region have begun to utilize enhanced scientific management methods as cotton planting enters its critical 'squaring' stage, essential to laying a good foundation for a bumper harvest this year. The squaring stage of cotton is when the cotton plant begins to form squares, small, green structures that will eventually become cotton bolls. An integrated system composed of information technologies, such as big data, cloud computing, the Internet of Things, Earth observation and the BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS), has been put into use for the first time to realize real-time monitoring of cotton growth, providing data support for precise and scientific management.
