An official at the Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) of the Government of Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) said on Tuesday that it will immediately suspend food import applications from Japan's nine prefectures, if the country releases nuclear-contaminated wastewater into the sea.

O Lam, acting chairman of the IAM, said in an interview that import suspension will be expanded to the country's nine "highest-risk prefectures," including Tokyo Metropolis and Chiba prefectures.

Products to be suspended will include aquatic products, vegetables and fruits.

Fresh and live food imported from other prefectures may be asked to attach a certificate on radiation monitoring and pass inspection before entering Macao SAR, she added.

The official said that she is closely watching Japan's plan of releasing Fukushima nuclear-contaminated water into the sea, and has been following up on the latest developments.

Macao SAR had temporarily suspended food import applications from Japan's Fukushima Prefecture since a magnitude-9 earthquake and a tsunami led to a nuclear reactor meltdown in 2011.

Since then, applications for the import of food from the nine prefectures near Fukushima have been asked to provide supporting documents, and have been subject to inspections, according to a statement released on the website of the Macao SAR government.

The Kyodo News reported on Monday that the Tokyo Electric Power Company began a 14-day trial operation of a facility that discharges wastewater from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, during which fresh water and seawater would be mixed to confirm whether the sea discharge equipment can operate reliably.
