As one of the few prospects having the potential to follow in Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo's footsteps and becomes football's greatest superstar, Kylian Mbappe has won almost everything domestically at Paris St-Germain.

Earlier this month, the French wunderkind clinched a fifth straight top scorer award and was named Ligue 1 Player of the Season for the fourth time in a row after driving PSG to a record 11th top flight title.

The Champions League is one Holy Grail that has so far alluded Mbappe, and in all likelihood the 24-year-old and his PSG teammates would be longshots to achieve the ultimate glory next season after the departure of Messi, and possibly, Neymar this summer.

And on Monday night, Mbappe made a bombshell call on his future.

According to multiple media outlets, he sent PSG a formal letter informing the club he will not take up the option of a 12-month extension on his contract. It means the striker could leave PSG as a free agent when his current deal expires in June 2024.

It's worth noting that PSG have already seen Messi leave for nothing in return, with the World Cup winner making a shock move to U.S. side Inter Miami. To avoid repeating the same mistake, PSG are planning to sell Mbappe during this transfer window rather than risk losing their biggest asset for free in a year's time.

The latest twist will put Europe's top sides on alert. Premier League giants Chelsea and Liverpool have all been linked with Mbappe in the past, but Spanish powerhouse Real Madrid, who are long time admirers of the Frenchman, is the most likely destination, particularly after Karim Benzema moved to Saudi Arabian champions Al Ittihad.

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez had a mouth-watering $237m offer on the table for Mbappe at one point in 2021, but those advances were rejected by PSG before they extended their record goalscorer's contract.

However, Mbappe has repeatedly declared that he is open to joining Madrid in the future and even called Perez to explain why he chose not to move to Spain two years ago.

"I have lots of respect for him [Perez] and for Real Madrid," said Mbappe during an interview. "They wanted to do a lot to make me happy. So I thank them for that. I'd also like to thank Real fans. I hope they'll understand the fact I've chosen to stay at PSG."

Last week, Real Madrid agreed to sign Jude Bellingham, one of Europe's top-rated youngsters, from Borussia Dortmund for a fee that could reach more than 130 million euros ($139 million). The potential signing of Mbappe would be another sensational scoop.

After bitter blows in both La Liga and Champions League last season, Real Madrid are reminding the world that they are still a force to be reckoned with.
