As a street dance form, breakdancing originated in the 1970s as part of hip-hop culture in the U.S. among African-American and Latino-American youth. In 2020, the International Olympic Committee announced that breakdancing would be added as an official medal event at Paris Olympic Games 2024. It is also set to make its official Asian Games debut at the Asian Games Hangzhou 2022.

After the postponement of the Games due to COVID-19 pandemic, the 19th Asian Games Hangzhou 2022 will now be held from September 23 to October 8 in 2023.
