As part of the ongoing 25th Shanghai International Film Festival, six science fiction movies are being screened at a drive-in theater at Shanghai Chenshan Botanical Garden in Songjiang District. Three classic Chinese sci-fi films include "Death Ray on Coral Island" and "Dislocation" from the 1980s, while three new international movies show how far the genre has come.

This open-air drive-in theater screened "Wonder Boy," also China's first children's science fiction film, co-directed by Song Chong and Wen Luming.
The film started a UFO and supernatural craze in China in the 1980s. It went on to become popular with future generations due to several reruns on TV.
One spectator who experienced the drive-in cinema for the first time said, "the overall ambiance is cozy. I really like the movie screened today and also wanted my child to see sci-fi movies from my childhood."

Since opening on January 23rd, the drive-in cinema has become a gathering place for night owls. It is equipped with two laser projectors and two large metal screens, each 10 meters high and 20 meters wide, allowing for two films to be screened at the same time. Optimus Prime, Bumblebee and their Autobot friends are back in the Hollywood movie "Transformers: Rise of the Beasts," which is also being shown at the drive-in cinema.
Zhu Hongfu, the director of the drive-in cinema, said "once the Sci-fi Film Week's online reservations opened, all 48 parking spaces were booked for each movie, which is free."
"Chenshan Botanical Garden Tower and Sheshan Observatory are visible, so the movies are playing after dark amidst the beautiful nighttime scenery of Shanghai Chenshan Botanical Garden. You can also enjoy the sunset and the evening breeze before the movie begins," he added.
