The green room is a staging area for players, their families and agents to stay and wait for NBA Commissioner Adam Silver to call a player's name if he is selected by a team. Each player is allowed to invite 10 people to sit at his table, five more than last year.
In order to decide who to invite to the green room, the NBA teams will first vote on the 25 players they believe will be selected first. Then the league will talk to the presidents or general managers of teams to decide the list, so players won't have to wait for an uncomfortably long time before they are drafted.
However, though the invitation to the green room is a kind of recognition of the player's talents, there have always been players who waited in the area until the second round. For example, Bol Bol was drafted by the Miami Heat with the 44th pick in 2019; Deyonta Davis was selected by the Boston Celtics with the 31st pick in 2016; Nic Claxton was drafted by the Brooklyn Nets with the 31st pick in 2019; Rashard Lewis was selected by the Seattle SuperSonics with the 32nd pick in 1998; and Jaden Hardy was drafted by the Sacramento Kings with the 37th pick in 2022.
