The Crime Statistics Agency in the Australian state of Victoria on Thursday released the latest data on crime incidents recorded by state police during the 12 months ending March this year, which showed an alarming surge in youth offenses.

Crime incidents in Victoria have risen by 5.6 percent from the previous year, with teenagers aged 10 to 14 responsible for a surge in youth offenses, according to the data from the local governmental agency.

Youth gang members were arrested 1,536 times, and burglaries committed by youths aged 10 to 14 jumped by 86.7 percent.

Despite overall home burglaries being at their third lowest level in the past decade, there was a 30-percent increase in aggravated residential burglaries driven by a predominantly youth cohort sneaking into unlocked homes to steal car keys.

Victoria Police have launched a specialized operation to address serious and violent youth crime, resulting in 137 fewer known youth gang members in Victoria than when Operation Alliance commenced in September 2020.
