Palestinian embroidery receives UNESCO recognition
CGTN

Embellished with shiny metal, and flowing down a runway in earthy color palettes matching the terrain of the Middle East, Palestinian embroidery continues to embody the spirit of its homeland.

Long regarded as the traditional dress of women in the region, Palestinian embroidery has been inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, giving it global recognition.

Fabrics such as wool, linen and cotton are embroidered with bird, flower and tree motifs to create sets of garments – from loose-fitting thobe gowns, trousers and jackets to headdresses and veils. The designs and colors are chosen to represent specific areas of Palestine, as well as the economic and marital status of the wearer.

This intergenerational embroidery practice is a symbol of Palestinian pride as mothers and daughters across the region gather to stitch and sew together, producing exquisite garments while helping to supplement their family income.
