Cyclone Biparjoy made landfall on Thursday evening in India's western coastal state of Gujarat, leaving high winds, heavy rains and flash floods in its wake.

The wind speed was 115 to 125 kph, gusting to 145 kph during the landfall process, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

According to the IMD, heavy rainfall is likely to continue during the landfall process.

It said the cyclone could cause tidal waves as high as two to three meters that could inundate low-lying coastal areas.

Nearly 100,000 coastal residents have been evacuated to safety. Fishing activities were halted, and several ports, railway stations and airports were temporarily suspended.

The IMD predicts that despite many precautions, the extremely severe cyclonic storm will still cause significant losses to the affected areas, including possible casualties, housing collapse, damage to a large number of crops, and interruptions to roads, electricity, telecommunications and networks.

Meanwhile, over 80,000 residents were evacuated from high-risk coastal areas in neighboring southern Pakistan, which was also struck by the cyclone.
