Swinging paddles in unison to the beat of a drum, dragon boat teams have raced with intense passion to the finishing line. The traditional paddling sport of dragon boat racing takes over China's rivers and lakes as the country approaches the Dragon Boat Festival on June 22 this year.
As a sport with a heritage of over 2,000 years, dragon boat racing involves a team of 10 to 50 paddlers propelling a long, narrow dragon-themed boat forward while a drummer signals pace, rhythm and timing. Races of 200, 250, 500, 1,000 and 2,000 meters feature. Dragon Boat racing was incorporated into the Asian Games in 2010.
