In this video, we take a look at the efforts by Xi Jinping, then vice mayor of Xiamen, to protect the local cultural heritage sites of Gulangyu, an enchanting island off the coast of Xiamen City in southeastern China. The efforts contributed to the island's designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2017. Though Gulangyu has always been known for its charm, preservation of local historical sites and cultural relics lagged behind in the 1980s.
