For the people of Yunnan province, the onset of summer is much anticipated for its harvest of a wide variety of tasty wild mushrooms. Yunnan is one of the world’s biodiversity hotspots. Its rainy summer season offers the perfect conditions for growing many savory summer treats. According to media reports, Yunnan has more than 900 species of wild edible mushrooms, with some 200 species commonly traded in local markets. Local authorities suggest that consumers only eat mushrooms from markets, as some wild mushroom varieties are extremely poisonous and can prove fatal if eaten.
