Wuhan Three Towns, the defending champions of the Chinese Super League (CSL), announced the appointment of Japan's Takahata Tsutomu as their new head coach on Sunday.

"Effective today, Mr. Takahata Tsutomu takes on the role of head coach for the first team of Wuhan Three Towns Football Club," stated the Wuhan team in their announcement.

Under former coach Pedro Morilla of Spain, the club had three victories, seven draws, and two losses in their first 12 matches this season.

Wuhan announced Morilla's dismissal on Saturday, citing the needs of the team as the driving force behind their decision.

Focusing on youth training, Tsutomu started his coaching career in China since 2016 at Hebei China Fortune. He also coached U-17 teams in Hebei and Guangdong Provinces.

Prior to joining Wuhan, the 55-year-old Japanese football manager led Hainan Star, a third-tier league side in China.

He was a player of Japanese side Fujitsu from 1991 to 1995 and then became a coach at the club after retirement in 1996.

Tsutomu is also the second coach from Japan in the CSL, after Takeshi Okada who coached Hangzhou Greentown in the 2012-2013 season.
