In Hubei Province's Zigui County, the birthplace of Qu Yuan, students commemorated the famous patriotic poet ahead of the Dragon Boat Festival. As a minister of the ancient state of Chu during China's Warring States Period (475-221 BC), this loyal official drowned himself in the Miluo River upon hearing about the defeat of his state. Legend has it that after the tragedy, many locals rushed to their boats to search for Qu Yuan, throwing rice into the water to distract the fish from eating his body – hence marking the origins of the Duanwu Festival and the zongzi (sticky rice dumplings) people eat today.
