China on Monday has expressed grave concerns to Japan through diplomatic channels over a Chinese researcher being arrested in Japan recently.

The remarks were made by Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning at a regular press brief in Beijing.

China has asked the Japanese side to effectively safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese citizens, and hopes that it will respect the rule of law, market economy and the principle of fair competition, building a sound environment for bilateral scientific and technological exchanges and cooperation, the spokesperson said.

Police in Tokyo on June 15 arrested a researcher from China in Japan for allegedly leaking sensitive tech information to a Chinese company, according to Japanese media agency The Japan Times.
