A rare footage of an endangered Chinese mountain cat hunting for prey in the Taizi Mountain Nature Reserve in northwest China's Gansu Province has been captured by reserve staff.
In the footage captured last Thursday, the mountain cat is seen pouncing on a small animal which it then carries off in its jaws. Staff have been using infrared cameras to locate mountain cats, which they then track with video cameras as part of their in-depth research on the animal.
The Chinese mountain cats are found only in China. The species is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, and is under the first-class state protection in China.
They mainly inhabit the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau and surrounding areas, and play a significant role in preventing damage done by rats to the plateau's ecosystem.
