CGTN reporters weigh in on Dragon Boat Festival zongzi debate

Zongzi, or sticky rice dumplings, are an integral part of the Dragon Boat Festival. Not only are they the most topical food at this time of the year, but there is also a debate about whether savory or sweet fillings are better.

The festive snack is made with sticky rice combined with sweet or savory fillings wrapped in bamboo or reed leaves. The savory option is usually filled with pork, beef or salted egg yolk – while the sweet choice is normally made of jujube or red bean paste.

Curious about the debate, CGTN reporters Lucy, Rachel and Wendyl went on a picnic and tried three different types of zongzi and gave their reviews. With their backgrounds in Australia, the United States and South Africa – would their zongzi preferences be different?

The Dragon Boat Festival falls on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month – which is June 22 this year.
