China has signed letters of intent to cooperate with three German automotive heavyweights in a bid to further promote cooperation in the automotive sector of the two nations, China's top economic planner said on Wednesday.

The German automakers – including Mercedez-Benz, BMW, and Volkswagen – were among those that signed agreements with China, according to statements from China's National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) on Wednesday.

In recent years, cooperation between China and Germany in the automobile industry has maintained sound momentum, said the NDRC.

The NDRC said it will work with the relevant companies to further boost cooperation in the automotive industry and advance cooperation in areas including research, innovation, and the widespread adoption of new energy vehicles.

The signings came as a Chinese delegation led by Chinese Premier Li Qiang visited Berlin for intergovernmental talks with their German counterparts, their first face-to-face summit since the COVID-19 pandemic.

Li, who was on his first overseas visit since becoming premier in March, said on Tuesday that China and Germany should work together to deepen economic and technical cooperation.

"We should not artificially exaggerate 'dependence,' or even simply equate interdependence with insecurity," he told Germany's top CEOs in a meeting on Monday.

"Lack of cooperation is the biggest risk, and lack of development is the biggest insecurity," he said.
