In Nantong City, east China's Jiangsu Province, the coast guards spotted a pod of about 60 false killer whales jumping and swimming alongside their boat when patrolling in the waters on Wednesday.

False killer whales are social animals found globally in all tropical and subtropical oceans. The species is listed as "near threatened" in the IUCN Red List and is under China's national second-class protection.

Every April to June, they follow the fish to the waters of Nantong and live there.

"The deep waters provide them with a large living space. Also, there is less human intervention during the seasonal fishing ban, so the false killer whales are more likely to be near the shore," said Xin Yu, an engineer at the Nantong Environmental Monitoring Center.

With the efforts of environmental protection in recent years, the ecological environment of the waters has continuously improved, and more false killer whales have appeared there.
