Chinese Premier stresses China's contribution to tackling climate change

Chinese Premier Li Qiang stressed China's contribution and urged further cooperation to tackle climate change on Friday at the closing ceremony of the Summit for a New Global Financing Pact in Paris.

Li indicated that as a responsible major country in the world, China has earnestly implemented the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Paris Agreement and made great efforts to address climate change. Leaders at the summit also noted that all parties should work together to reduce inequality and poverty across the world, respond to climate change, protect biodiversity, settle the debt problems facing developing countries and promote global sustainable development.

Li said China actively promotes the green and low-carbon energy transition and responsibly participates in promoting global energy transition and tackling climate change. China is ready to work with other countries to forge a global partnership for clean energy cooperation under the principles of mutual benefit and common but differentiated responsibilities, with technological innovation being the core driving force, and jointly build a clean and beautiful world, said the Chinese premier.

The summit was proposed by French President Emmanuel Macron last November, aiming to explore the current status and prospects of climate action and international financial system reform.

Before attending the summit, Li had officially visited Germany and France from June 18 to 23 and talked about the consensus and further cooperation on tackling climate change with officials from the two countries.

Through a partnership established in 2005, China and the EU's cooperation on climate change provides a high-level framework. Over the past decade or so, China and the EU have strengthened cooperation in areas including long-term emission reduction strategies, emissions trading, climate-related technologies development, and investment in clean energy projects. In September 2020, China and the EU announced the establishment of the High-Level Joint Dialogue on Environment and Climate (HECD).
