The Chinese Foreign Ministry on Monday urged South Korea to work with it to bring bilateral relations back on the track of healthy development.

South Korean Foreign Minister Park Jin said on Sunday that there is "no need" for his country to sour ties with China, and Seoul will continue to step up communication with Beijing to boost their friendly ties, according to Yonhap news agency.

The Chinese side has noted the remarks by Park, said Mao Ning, spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, at a regular press briefing in Beijing on Monday.

Noting that China and South Korea are "close neighbors and important partners," Mao said it is in the common interest of both sides to maintain a healthy and stable development of bilateral relations.

"China-South Korea relations are now facing some difficulties, and the crux is clear," she said.

China's fundamental position of attaching great importance to and developing its relations with South Korea has remained unchanged, she added.

"We hope that the South Korean side will meet the Chinese side halfway and make efforts to promote the return to a healthy development of relations between the two countries."
