First baseman Freddie Freeman of the Los Angeles Dodgers got the 2,000th hit of his career during the eighth inning of the game against the Houston Astros at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, California, on Sunday.

The Dodgers were trailing 4-1 with two outs before Freeman hit the ball into the right-center-field gap for Mookie Betts to score a valuable run to cut the deficit. Freeman, 33, became the sixth active player to reach 2,000 hits after Miguel Cabrera of the Detroit Tigers, Joey Votto of the Cincinnati Reds, Nelson Cruz of the San Diego Padres, Elvis Andrus of the Chicago White Sox and Andrew McCutchen of the Pittsburgh Pirates.

This is another milestone in Freeman's career after he hit his 300th home run 38 days before, making him the 98th player in the Major League Baseball (MLB) history to accrue at least 300 homers and 2,000 hits.

"The fans have embraced my family and I since the day they got here," Freeman said after Sunday's game. "They made another special memory for the Freeman family. Dodger fans never disappoint. Another special day, one I'll never forget. Took long enough, but I'm glad it happened at home."

After Freeman's memorable play, Will Smith followed up with a two-run homer to tie the score at 4-4 for the Dodgers, forcing the game into extra time. They lost it 6-5 after 11 innings in the end.

The 2023 campaign is Freeman's second season in the Dodgers. He signed a six-year, $162 million extension with the team in March 2022. He has hit .317 at bats, .391 in on-base percentage and .549 in slugging percentage per game in 77 appearances.

"I just marvel at his consistency, his everyday, workman-like attitude," the Dodgers' manager Dave Roberts said of Freeman. "Hasn't been great the last week, but you know you can pencil him in there and he's going to give you his best every single day."
