Naked carps swim against currents to spawn in NW China

Every May to August, naked carps in Qinghai Lake, northwest China's Qinghai Province swim upstream against the currents to spawn.

On the Quanji River, one of the inflow rivers of Qinghai Lake, an artificial stairway channel has been built to help them migrate. Huge numbers of fish gather at the mouth of the river, waiting for a chance to enter the channel.

"The temperature is lower and the precipitation is also higher compared with the same period last year. The number of fish migrating reached the peak during the Dragon Boat Festival last year (June 3), while this year, there are not as many due to the heavy rainfall and the strong river flows. We expect it to peak around early July," said Guo Ruochen, assistant engineer at Qinghai Lake Naked Carp Rescue Center.

The naked carp is a species of fish endemic to Qinghai Lake. Under China's national second-class protection, it is a core species within the water-fish-bird-grass ecosystem of Qinghai Lake.

However, the species was on the brink of extinction a few decades ago.

Through the prohibition of fishing, artificial breeding and release, and the improvement of the ecology of the Qinghai Lake over decades, the population of the species has continued to increase.

As of 2022, the standing stock of the species had reached 114,000 tonnes, about 44 times more than the 2,600 tonnes in 2002.
