Protests intensify in ROK against Japan's nuclear wastewater plan
02:00

Tokyo Electric Power Company, the operator of the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in Japan, on Monday finished removing the heavy machinery used for digging the ocean tunnel. The preparation for releasing the treated water into the ocean will be almost complete once the discharge port is covered, according to Fukushima Central Television.

Opposition is mounting in the Republic of Korea (ROK), with a large-scale protest held in Seoul by citizen groups on Saturday, calling for a boycott of the release.

If the contaminated water from Fukushima is released into the ocean, it will cause a sharp decline in the consumption of seafood such as sea snails and yellowtail, resulting in a huge loss of approximately 3682.3 billion won (about 2.8 billion U.S. dollars) to the Korean seafood industry each year.
