As the longest river in China and the third longest river in the world, the Yangtze River winds through as many as 11 provincial regions in the country. There are more than 100 bridges spanning the river, serving both road and railway connections between the two sides of the river. Among them, the Baishatuo Yangtze River Railway Bridge is the first bridge built over the Yangtze River in Chongqing. It was closed in 2019 and replaced by the more than five-kilometer-long New Baishatuo Yangtze River Railway Bridge which has four tracks on the upper deck for passenger trains and two tracks on the lower deck for cargo trains. In Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, the Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge is one of the city's finest structures. Erected in 1968, it was the first China-designed road-and-rail truss bridge spanning across the Yangtze River.
