Team China started their FIBA Women's Basketball Asia Cup campaign with a 89-44 victory over Lebanon on Monday in Sydney.

Having finished second place in the 2021 Asia Cup and last year's World Cup, the Chinese squad are eyeing the event's title for the first time since 2011, one they have won a total of 11 times in history.

Towering Han Xu was unstoppable inside the paint to finish with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Li Meng, another franchise player for China at the World Cup, had 12 points, five assists and four rebounds.

"We had limited time to train together as a whole and adapt to each other's styles," Han said after the game.

"I think we need to strengthen our defense in the following games," she added.

Lebanon provided an early fight and was inspired by their best player Rebecca Akl, who scored 9 of her 13 points in the first quarter.

Meanwhile, 12-time champion South Korea lost to New Zealand 66-64 though they put up a hard fight to narrow a 16-point gap from the first two quarters down to six points in the third, and level the match multiple times before the whistle blew.

The top four teams of the Asia Cup will qualify for the Paris 2024 qualifier as well as the next edition of World Cup.
