Located in the downtown area, the North Market now lies at the center of the three main business districts of the city. Over a century ago, the area saw rapid development as a popular business district because of a series of treaties made in 1906 and its convenient transportation links. Many international merchants flocked to the area to do business. In its heyday, the area featured three large theaters, over a hundred restaurants, three shopping areas and many hotels, shops, tea houses and banks.

Ancient temples, time-honored calligraphy and painting houses, theaters and many other creative businesses have set up in the area over time. The Shisheng Temple in the market can be traced back to the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). After its renovation, the temple retained its original appearance and continues to house many precious artworks and antiques. In addition, an antique market was built around the temple featuring stores selling bronze ware, jade, ancient books, paintings and works of calligraphy.
