Chinese Ambassador to the United States Xie Feng on Tuesday held a phone conversation with U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman, calling for efforts to gradually bring China-U.S. relations back onto the right track.

Xie thanked the U.S. side for its support and assistance in performing his duties, adding that a sound and stable China-U.S. relationship is in the interest of the two countries, and is also a shared expectation of the international community.

The three principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation represent the fundamental and right way for the two countries to get along with each other in the new era, Xie noted.

The ambassador said he hopes that the U.S. side will work with China in the same direction, remain committed to the consensus reached by the two heads of state in Bali, demonstrate respect and remove obstacles with concrete actions.

He also expressed his hope that the U.S. will properly handle important and sensitive issues such as the Taiwan question on the basis of the three China-U.S. joint communiques, enhance dialogue, manage difference and conduct cooperation to gradually bring bilateral relations back onto the right track.

Welcoming Xie to assume his new post, Sherman said the U.S. Department of State will continue to provide convenience and support for Ambassador Xie to perform his duties.

The two sides also exchanged views on issues of common concern, and agreed to maintain communication.
