China delivered two independently developed unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) on Wednesday after a maiden meteorological detection flight over the southeastern edge of the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau.

Developed by Aviation Industry Corporation of China, the two UAVs, coded Haiyan (sea swallow), have been delivered to China Meteorological Administration, in the process initiating a national-level mobile meteorological observation service.

The Haiyan-I UAV is an adaptive modification of Wing Loong-10, a high-altitude and high-speed UAV.

It took off from the Zigong Lantian Airport in southwest China's Sichuan Province, and carried out a meteorological vertical detection mission, completing the first flight by the national mobile meteorological observation service.

The other UAV, Haiyan-II, was adapted from Wing Loong-2 UAV.

Both the UAVs feature strong operational capabilities in complex environments. 

They can continuously carry out atmospheric vertical profile detection in specific environments, and provide first-hand meteorological information for important weather processes such as southwest vortex and plateau meteorology, observation in areas sensitive to weather and climate, emergency support and meteorological disaster prevention and mitigation.
