Morocco has recalled its ambassador to Sweden for an indefinite period in protest at Quran burning, state news agency Maghreb Arabe Press reported.

A person identified as Salwan Momika of Iraqi origin burned the Quran under police protection in front of the Stockholm Mosque on Wednesday, the first day of Eid al-Adha, one of the major Islamic festivals.

Swedish police granted permission for a protest to take place, Reuters reported, and later charged the man with agitation against an ethnic or national group.

Morocco's Foreign Ministry summoned Sweden's chargé d'affaires in Rabat on Wednesday and expressed the kingdom's "strong condemnation of this attack and its rejection of this unacceptable act," the state news agency said.

On Wednesday, Türkiye also condemned the burning. "To turn a blind eye to such atrocious acts is to be a partner in crime," said Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan.
