China expressed strong opposition against the U.S. government as it approved arms sales worth $440 million to Taiwan on Thursday.

"More and more people in Taiwan have realized that the U.S. is turning Taiwan into a 'powder keg' and an 'ammunition depot,' which is not protecting the island, but destroying it," Zhu Fenglian, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council said on Friday.

The arms package is expected to include 30mm ammunition, spare parts for wheeled vehicles and other weapons, according to a statement from the U.S. Department of Defense. This is the 10th arms-sales package to Taiwan under U.S. President Joe Biden.

The spokesperson said that the authorities of the Democratic Progressive Party are currying favor with the U.S. by spending the hard-earned money of people in Taiwan, which is pushing them into the danger of war.

She noted that China firmly opposes any form of official exchanges or military contacts between the U.S. and Taiwan, and resolutely opposes U.S. arms sales to Taiwan.

She also urged the U.S. to abide by the one-China principle and the three China-U.S. joint communiques, stop the arms sales and break off any form of military contact with Taiwan.

"The U.S. should refrain from going further down the wrong and dangerous path," Zhu warned, adding "Taiwan independence" has no way out, and relying on the U.S. to seek "independence" is a dead end.
