The NBA teams moved quickly right after the free agency began on Friday. Many players chose to stay where they are with a contract extension while some joined new teams for better salaries.
Tyrese Haliburton reaches a five-year, $260 million extension with the Indiana Pacers, according to ESPN
Haliburton's new deal became the largest one in the Pacers' history. Having played his first full season for the team during the 2022-23 campaign, he averaged 20.7 points, 10.4 assists and 2.9 triples at 40 percent per game. He was also chosen for the All-Star Game for the first time in his career.
This is the second time for the Pacers to give a player a $100+million extension in franchise history, which showed how much importance the team attaches to Haliburton. When he was on the court, they were a top-five offensive team in the NBA. It has been three seasons since the Pacers appeared in the playoffs. They count on Haliburton to break that awkward drought.

Desmond Bane reaches a five-year, $207 million extension with the Memphis Grizzlies, according to ESPN
The Grizzlies gave their first $200 million contract in franchise history to Bane, whom they drafted with the 30th pick in 2020. It took him only three years to become a shooting guard who averaged 21.5 points and 2.9 triples at 40.8 percent per game. His 3-point shooting production and efficiency have been and will continue to play an integral role in the team's offense.
Bane's extension means the Grizzlies have locked their young core with him, Ja Morant and Jaren Jackson Jr. are all on long terms. They finished the past two regular seasons both with over 50 wins, but still need to prove their competitiveness in the playoffs.

Draymond Green reaches a four-year, $100 million extension with the Golden State Warriors, according to ESPN
Green declined his $27.5 million play option for the 2023-24 season earlier this week. His new deal includes a player option for the final season to resign with the team, according to ESPN. He has been a Warrior since the team drafted him with the 35th pick in 2012 and became an integral part of the team, especially on the defensive end, since the 2014-15 season, when they began their five-NBA-Finals streak.
As a four-time All-Star, Green remains an elite defender at 33 years old. He was selected into the All-Defensive Second Team last season. Keeping him on the roster enables the Warriors to maintain their core combination that also includes Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson. The three have won five NBA championships as teammates.

Kyrie Irving reaches a three-year, $126 million extension with the Dallas Mavericks, according to ESPN
It's not very surprising that the Mavericks kept Irving with a big contract after they traded multiple quality role players and most of their future assets for him with the Brooklyn Nets in the middle of the 2022-23 season. Moreover, both the length and the salary of Irving's new deal prove that he may not be as attractive, as many expect, to teams as a free agent.
Irving, 31, averaged 27 points, five rebounds and six assists while draining 2.9 triples at 39.2 percent per game since he arrived in Dallas. The back-court pair of him and Luka Doncic were dominant on the offensive end, but they lost 11 of the 16 games which the two played together.

Khris Middleton reaches a three-year, $102 million extension with the Milwaukee Bucks, according to ESPN
The 2022-23 campaign has been very rough for both Middleton and the Bucks. Middleton played only 33 games in the regular season because of injuries, averaging only 15.1 points and 4.9 assists per game. He shot as poorly as 31.5 percent from downtown. Middleton performed much better in the playoffs, but still couldn't save his team from being troubled by the Miami Heat in the first round.
Middleton, who turns 32 in August, declined his $40 million player option for the 2023-24 season to become a free agent in June. He agreed to take less money in the new deal so the Bucks have more cap space to negotiate extensions with key players like Brook Lopez and Jae Crowder and, if possible, sign free agents to improve their lineup.

Jerami Grant reaches a five-year, $160 million extension with the Portland trail Blazers, according to ESPN
Giving Grant a contract like this made another confusing move by the Trail Blazers. They only won 33 games in the 2022-23 campaign, which was why the team was lucky enough to receive the No. 3 draft pick. Instead of trading it to improve their lineup, the team used it to select Scoot Henderson, who seems redundant with Damian Lillard. Then, instead of trading Grant to fix the flaws of their squad, the Trail Blazers agreed to such a long-term extension with him.
Grant averaged 20.5 points and 2.3 triples at 40.1 percent per game in the 2022-23 season. He is more of an isolation-first forward who builds his individual attack on production instead of efficiency. He was already competing with Lillard and Anfernee Simons to attack off the dribble. The arrival of Henderson will only make Portland's distribution of ball possessions trickier.

Cameroon Johnson reaches a four-year, $108 million extension with the Brooklyn Nets, according to ESPN
The Nets have been overloaded in the two forward positions since they made the blockbuster trade with the Phoenix Suns over Kevin Durant in February. Now it seems that Johnson will be a core piece of the team for the coming future.
As a 2.03-meter-tall forward, Johnson fits modern basketball perfectly thanks to his solid catch-and-shooting ability behind the arc and underestimated defense of big wingmen. He played only 42 games last season due to injuries, but started all 25 of them for the Nets, averaging 16.6 points and 2.3 triples at 37.2 percent per game.

Kyle Kuzma reaches a four-year, $102 million extension with the Washington Wizards, according to ESPN
The Wizards understandably gave Kuzma a deal like this because they have a long way ahead for a rebuild after sending away Bradley Beal and Kristaps Porzingis. Kuzma had the career-best-performing season during the 2022-23 campaign as he averaged 21.2 points, 7.2 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 2.5 triples per game. Though he is not a smooth shooter at the 3-point line, his style of play can be an insurance for the box office.
The Wizards missed the playoffs in the past twos seasons and are about to completely start over. Neither Kuzma nor Jordan Poole is likely to be their game-changer, but the team won't be under any pressure to achieve a good result for at least two years. They spend these two years watching Kuzma and Poole play freely to drop good numbers, which may enable them to appreciate on the trade market.

Fred VanVleet agrees to a three-year, $130 million contract offered by the Houston Rockets, according to ESPN
The Rockets have some $64 million of cap space to use this summer, the largest in the league. It didn't take long for them to decide to cut a huge part of it and spend it on VanVleet, one of the biggest free agents on the market.
Having averaged 19.3 points, 7.2 assists and three triples at 34.2 percent per game last season, VanVleet declined the $22.8 million player option with the Toronto Raptors before getting the biggest-ever deal for an undrafted player in NBA history.
Though VanVleet cannot match James Harden in playmaking or Kyrie Irving in separation, he is a better defender than both and can switch more freely between attacking off the dribble and doing it without the ball. The Rockets have assembled enough talents of dribbling to work in the two guard positions. They need someone like VanVleet to pair with Jalen Green, Kevin Porter Jr. and Amen Thompson as well as his energy and experience as a champion guard.

Bruce Brown agrees to a two-year, $45 million contract offered by the Indiana Pacers, according to ESPN
When the Denver Nuggets won the NBA title in June, somewhere on their mind, they knew they wouldn't be able to retain Brown. He joined the Nuggets on a two-year, $13.3 million contract in summer 2022. Having averaged 11.5 points per game in the regular season and 12 points per game in the playoffs, Brown became the most trustworthy player of the team outside their starting lineup.
That's why Brown turned down the $6.8 million player option for the 2023-24 season with the Nuggets, who definitely wanted to keep him, but couldn't match the Pacers' offer. Nonetheless, though the Pacers are very generous in their salary, they added a team option for the second year in Brown's contract.

Gabe Vincent agrees to a three-year, $33 million contract offered by the Los Angeles Lakers, according to ESPN
Having averaged 12.7 points, 3.5 assists and 2.3 triples at 37.8 percent per game in the post season, Vincent played an integral role for the Heat to go all the way to the NBA Finals as the No. 8 seed of the Eastern Conference. His remarkable performance earned him the chance to make some big bucks after getting only $5.3 million in four years as an undrafted player.
The Lakers outbid the Heat to bring Vincent, who can play multiple positions, to Los Angeles. He fits well in the team's system which requires role players to do a bit of everything ranging from ball-handling, attacking off the dribble to shoot in the middle range and charge the rim, to catch-and-shooting as well as switching to guard different positions.

While signing new players to their roster, the purple and gold also retained Rui Hachimura on a three-year, $51 million extension. He joined the team in the middle of the season and rose to play a key role offensively in the playoffs, averaging 12.2 points per game. Hachimura's size and isolation ability in the mid-post makes him a reliable defensive option for big wings and a consistent scorer off the bench.
The Lakers are trying to reach an extension with Austin Reaves as well. He became the team's second playmaker and the third scorer in the post season while averaging 16.9 points, 4.6 assists and 2.4 triples at 44.3 percent per game. ESPN revealed that the team plans to offer him a four-year, $52 million deal.
