26 people killed after bus catches fire on Indian expressway

Twenty-six people died and eight others were injured after a bus caught fire on an expressway in India's southwestern state of Maharashtra on Saturday, local media outlet ANI reported.

The accident took place on the Samruddhi Mahamarg Expressway near Nagpur city at around 1:35 a.m. local time. The bus had 33 passengers onboard and was travelling from Nagpur to Pune, ANI said. 

The cause of the accident is not yet known.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered condolences, saying he was "deeply saddened by the devastating bus mishap." 

"The local administration is providing all possible assistance to the affected," Modi's office tweeted.
